The inventor of the parachute died testing it
Franz Reichelt, a French tailor, main goal when he began working on “flying suits” in the 20th century was to design protective gear for pilots. The equipment would come in the form of a suit, and it would cushion pilots from injury should they want to jump out of their moving aircraft. Unlike other inventions that used dummies, Franz Reichelt wished to test the suit himself by jumping from the Eiffel Tower. It was a stupid mistake since the suit failed to deploy, and Franz fell to his death at the base of the tower. He must be among the inventors who regretted their inventions.
Dynamite was meant for peaceful purposes
While inventing dynamite from a mixture of nitroglycerin, powdered rock, and sodium carbonate, Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist and engineer, the main goal was to replace the nitroglycerin explosive. The Swedish chemist’s main goal was to invent an explosive that would bring peace across continents. However, Alfred Nobel did not live long enough to witness the damage caused by the explosion in World War 1.
The microchip was meant for war-time purposes
The U.S military searched for a device that would allow more accurate targeting of missiles after World War II. Therefore, they provided funding to some groups to help develop this small device. However, companies such as Intel and Texas Instruments did not have enough funding to establish the microchip soon.
The Chinese takeout boxes are American
It probably comes as a surprise to learn that Chinese takeout boxes have an American origin. These boxes are a Chicago invention from 1894. However, they are an inspiration of origami, which makes them at least have a Chinese origin. Chinese food found its way into the American market in the 1970s, and this inspired the graphic designer to put Chinese designs on these iconic take out boxes.
The creator of the stop sign never used it
William Phelps Eno is the Father of Traffic Safety, and he is the mastermind behind the creation of the stop sign in the early 1900s. William also came up with other iconic inventions such as crosswalks, one-way streets, and traffic circles. The most exciting part is that William never had the opportunity of ever driving; hence, he never benefited from his road safety inventions.
NASA invented the infant formula
You might be thinking that the world’s most famous space program was once in the baby business. This is not true since NASA did not have the intention of making infant formula. Together with Martek, a bioscience company, the space program developed a nutritional supplement to sustain its astronauts in space. This supplement was later found to have two fatty acid components essential for infant development.
